Paragliding Course: The Guide to Learn and Progress in Flight

Paragliding Course Guide

Do you dream of flying on your own? Learning paragliding is an accessible adventure, but it requires professional supervision to start with confidence. Whether you are a beginner or a pilot seeking performance, this guide covers everything you need to know about free flight training in France.

Feel free to explore all our paragliding courses in the Alps.

Why take a paragliding course?

Free flight cannot be improvised. Taking a paragliding course with an FFVL-certified school ensures a structured learning process.

- Safety & Confidence: Guided by certified instructors, you learn to analyze aerology and control your wing.

- Equipment included: No need to invest right away. Schools provide all the necessary gear (wing, harness, reserve parachute, helmet).

- Fast progression: From your first ground handling sessions on the training slope to obtaining your pilot license, each step is validated to lead you towards autonomy.

Which paragliding course should you choose based on your level?

The progression in paragliding is divided into key stages to match your pace:

- Beginner (Initiation): For those who have never flown before. You learn the basics on the ground before performing your first solo flights guided by radio.

- Progression & Advanced Training: For pilots who have already completed an initial course. The goal is to gain autonomy, learn to use the first thermals, and explore different flying sites.

- Cross Country & Performance: Designed for experienced pilots who want to fly long distances (over 100 km) and optimize their transitions in flight.

- SIV & Technical Flying: Courses in a safe environment (over water) to master flight incidents and develop the right reflexes in strong conditions.

- Hike & Fly (Single-skin): A specific course for mountain enthusiasts who want to use ultra-light equipment for "Hike & Fly".

Where to learn paragliding in France?

France is one of the best countries in the world to learn paragliding. While the Alps host most of the schools, each region offers unique opportunities:

- Isère & Saint-Hilaire-du-Touvet: The true birthplace of paragliding worldwide and home of the Coupe Icare. It is the ideal place to start thanks to its exceptional facilities near Grenoble.

- Savoie & Annecy: For flying above one of the purest lakes in Europe.

- Pyrenees, Vosges and Massif Central: Perfect terrains for hike & fly and a more adventurous progression.

- Seaside: From the Dune du Pilat to the cliffs of Normandy, ideal for learning ridge soaring and "soaring".

Budget: How much does a paragliding course cost?

The cost of training depends on the duration (weekend or full week) and the level of technicality. On average, expect €310 to €350 for a weekend course and between €700 and €800 for a full 5-day course.

Ready to fly solo?

Reaching autonomy is the ultimate goal for every trainee. It requires both technical mastery (take-off/landing) and psychological maturity. Generally, autonomy is achieved after a full training cycle including beginner and progression courses.
