Cold hands are one of the biggest challenges faced by paragliders during their flights. It can cause intense pain in the fingers, making it difficult to manage the controls and accessories in flight. Often, this even forces some pilots to shorten their flights due to the pain.
It's important to note that winter or autumn aren't the only seasons affected by this phenomenon. Even in summer or spring, paragliding gloves might be necessary. Generally, the temperature drops by 1°C for every 100 meters of altitude. Thus, even if the temperature seems mild at landing or takeoff, it can be much colder in the air, forcing you to land earlier than planned.

This type of glove is mainly used in autumn and spring, before the onset of winter temperatures or just after they end. The winter gloves are used when mid-season gloves are no longer effective enough to reduce the sensation of cold on your hands. Thicker, they are generally used from December to the end of April/beginning of May. They warm the palm and back of the hand and must offer good breathability to combat perspiration. They can be made of Gore-tex fabric or leather, which are windproof and perfect against the cold.
Moreover, during this time of year, some pilots prefer to opt for mittens. In fact, these not only protect from the cold but also allow better grip of the controls, which are inserted inside the mitten.
Lastly, we can also mention the heated gloves that many paragliders use during the coldest days of the year. Some people are more sensitive to cold than others and may find their fingers literally freezing during a flight.
For these individuals, it is recommended to use heated gloves as they not only cover your hands but also provide continuous warmth. With rechargeable heated batteries, they are significant reinforcements against extreme cold.
However, keep in mind that this requires ensuring the battery is fully charged and that its autonomy is long enough to cover the entirety of your paragliding or paramotoring flight.
